A Thing can be anything as long as it is connected and publishes data and receives data from other connected devices.

The fundamental future  of IoT is publishing data for end users. The communication is sometimes bidirectional but most often, it is one directional. 

When a device is publishing data, it needs to establish a connection. This is either CAT-M connection using mobile network, Narrow Band connection using NB-IoT spectrum , BLE connection of mobile phone ,  WiFi connection , LoRa band, ZigBee band or any other communication frequency. 

When data from a device is published, usually it is published using MQTT protocol with grammar built in the firmware. The identification  to cloud services are done with device certificates loaded into the device as a part of the firmware.

Once data riches cloud, data is usually first published into a topic or queue. To turn into persistent data it needs to be moved from a queue or topic to a permanent persistent structure like timestamped data base with retention policy or to more traditional NoSQL or RDBMS. 

Once data is in DB a middle tier application usually with a public facing API is required to provide resources to deliver data to end users or to data lakes. This is typically a Java based application with web hooks and well documented API for business logic and data post processing. 

Final stage of the IoT process is to integrate the data for Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Business Logic or Mobile App to be used for intended purpose.
